A little while ago I wrote about the 50 best places to stay in Tasmania. It was an extensive list of the best hotels, shacks and airbnbs you can stay at in Tasmania, my island home. On that list, you would have found one of Tasmania’s best Airbnb’s, a three bedroom shack that goes by the name of Whale Song shack in Falmouth on Tasmania’s East Coast. And to my sheer delight, I had the pleasure of staying there this week! I embarked on a two-night solo escape to Whale Song shack and after some much needed rest and relaxation, am excited to share with you the small moments that made this stay so great.
Checking In to Whale Song Shack
Tasmania’s East Coast has long been the prized jewel in the island’s dazzling crown, yet the small township of Falmouth is often overlooked by visitors. That is because unless you are staying at a shack here, you are likely to miss it.
Tucked away quietly in a remote part of the East Coast, the nearest major town is a thirty-minute drive away. St Helens is one of the largest towns on the coast, with many great cafes and gift shops as well as a major supermarket. So although you will feel a world away, you’re no more than a thirty-minute drive from all of the ammenities.
However once you arrive at Whale Song, you’ll find it hard to ever leave again. So I’d recommend stocking up on groceries and snacks, so once you check-in you can really check out (from reality) and make the most of your stay.
The East Coast of Tasmania
The shack has an uninterrupted view of the ocean, located just a few steps away from the waters edge. It is private and secluded, so you can really enjoy some time to yourself and let your worries float away with the waves.
After checking-in, I perched myself on the outdoor deck chairs with a cup of coffee, a good book, and let myself give way to the breezy oceanside living. And when it was time to switch gears, I poured myself a refreshing gin and tonic to watch the sun go down, something I haven’t been able to truly enjoy since living in Cape Town a year ago. Back in South Africa we called them “sundowners” and as the name suggests, you enjoy your favourite drink as you watch the sun go down. It’s pretty close to my definition of perfect!
Inside the shack
The shack has two generous sized bedrooms with queen beds, plus an extra study with a single bed if you have a larger group. It is the perfectly sized getaway for a solo escape, however has ample beds to account for a couples escape or even a group getaway (the perfect girls retreat!)
With a full sized kitchen and everything you could ever need to cook up a storm, there’s no reason to leave once you arrive. Everything from pots and pans to a blender can be found in the outfitted kitchen, so be sure to pack all your usual ingredients to enjoy a cook up and your favourite breakfast smoothie.
There are a handful of bench chairs and ample bench space both indoors and outdoors, plus a full sized dining table both inside and out.
